Background.
You've heard of his family, even if you know nothing about them. They're a household name, people to admire or despise, part of the social consciousness. Don't worry about what their name is. You know exactly the kind of people they are: exorbitantly wealthy, old money, old traditions, probably a little bit inbred if you go back far enough (and they go back far), with as much power and influence as the Rockefellers and Medicis combined.
Shanks is the baby of the family, the one always in the headlines and gossip rags for good or ill. When he was an infant, he was abducted and grew up apart from the family until he was fifteen. The incredible story of his return exploded all over the news — rife with shocking allegations of human trafficking, child pornography, sex slaves, and cult brainwashing — which dominated global media cycles for almost a year. Shanks never really told his side of the story; his family's PR team did all the work for him, and investigative journalists and paparazzi did the rest.
In his early thirties, he eloped with Set, his then somewhat secret paramour — which, of course, stirred another scandal, considering that he had recently and very publicly proposed to longtime friend [YOU?!]. (A publicity stunt orchestrated to dispel rumors about his sexuality, which he was forced to go along with.)
Now, more than twenty years since the prodigal son returned, the truth of his childhood years will finally be revealed! That camera crew you've seen setting up equipment around the manor? They're here to film a new documentary, obviously! The Balfours have graciously offered to host the film crew for some of their oldest family friends. (There are even whispers of a big surprise event toward the end of filming in August — if you heard something about a vow renewal ceremony, no you didn't!)

incapacitation renders a person unconscious by overpowering their will. can be withstood with significant concentration but will make the person affected feel lightheaded. those with sufficient strength and willpower are not affected. can affect 100,000 people at once if not more. can be unleashed verbally or nonverbally; consciously or unconsciously.
pressure causes collateral damage to inanimate objects and structures around the user. generates powerful energy and shockwaves, which may exert extreme force on the surrounding area, and can also create a massive rift in the sky when two users clash.
infusion a method of augmenting a user's body or weapon to dramatically increase attack power. can cause damage without weapons ever clashing.
observation killing control over his metaphysical presence and aura, which prevents others from using observation haki on him to see the future.
hardening coats any body part with a black shell, which is nearly impenetrable and significantly increases attack power. however, an opponent with stronger haki can overwhelm and penetrate the defenses of the weaker user. such an opponent would have to be exponentially more skilled than shanks to break his defenses.
imbuement a method of using hardening on a user's weapon to increase offensive power. prevents a blade from being damaged or chipped and increases its lifespan.
emission unleashes a burst of power from the user's body, which will knock back anything in the immediate vicinity with the force of a very powerful punch, allowing the user to strike or harm opponents or objects without making physical contact.
strength sensing allows the user to measure the strength of another person or presence. the user can then easily locate powerful allies or avoid powerful enemies.
emotion sensing allows the user to sense and empathize with the emotions and nature of others passively or actively. however, those who have significant control over their emotions can fool or mislead this sense.
intent sensing allows the user to sense another person's intent to act in the immediate future (typically during combat), serving as a form of precognition. the more killing intent exuded by a given enemy, the more predictable their attacks.
future vision allows the user to see a brief glimpse of the future. instead of just sensing what will happen by intuition, the user can literally see a precise mental image of what will happen in the next few seconds (anywhere up to a minute), including anything that may be spoken.
irl is super busy for me, so i tend to tag most often in the evenings and some weekends, but i can be pretty slow. text threads are naturally easier for me to hit back quickly — but i will always backtag if you're still up for it!

shanks is extremely well-known within canon, so he would obviously expect people to recognize him (by his bounty or as an emperor), but otherwise let's keep that wall intact, please.

you're welcome to try! shanks is most comfortable with casual intimacy with his crew and people he considers close friends or family, but he isn't particularly touchy-feely with strangers (unless he is very drunk). he's fairly reserved in terms of sexual intimacy as well, unless your name happens to be buggy the clown.
he's been a pirate for 90% of his life so he's no stranger to violence or injury (and is actually quite blasé about injury, see: his indifference to missing an arm). and while i'm happy to rough him up a bit, he does try to avoid unnecessary violence when at all possible.

canon: my brain simply cannot contain all of one piece canon so my knowledge is generally reserved for shanks and shanks-adjacent canon but i don't care about spoilers at all so hmu! everything is fair game!
tag style: i default to brackets and present tense. i try to avoid prose, just as a personal preference.
