ABILITIES
swordsmanship once the rival of the greatest swordsman in the world, shanks is an impressive swordsman in his own right β€” and despite having lost his dominant hand, he is still one of the most powerful opponents one might face. his signature move, kamusari (divine departure), which he learned from the late pirate king gol d. roger, can be immensely devastating even with his non-dominant hand.

HAKI & OPT-IN
shanks is an extremely powerful user of all three types of haki (below), but it is also very rare that he uses these skills offensively without due cause. unless he's in enemy territory or feels sufficiently threatened (or enraged), it's very unlikely most folks will encounter his haki actively; passively, he is effectively an empath and possesses an incredible amount of control over his own mind and presence. please comment below if you'd like to opt-in, otherwise i will operate on opt-out by default (unless we've discussed otherwise).
conqueror haki
domination temporarily dominates the will of "lesser" minds of any sentient creature, causing those affected to feel uneasy, intimidated, fearful, or simply submissive. can be unleashed even from great distances. those with greater mental fortitude will not be affected or will be affected less intensely.

incapacitation renders a person unconscious by overpowering their will. can be withstood with significant concentration but will make the person affected feel lightheaded. those with sufficient strength and willpower are not affected. can affect 100,000 people at once if not more. can be unleashed verbally or nonverbally; consciously or unconsciously.

pressure causes collateral damage to inanimate objects and structures around the user. generates powerful energy and shockwaves, which may exert extreme force on the surrounding area, and can also create a massive rift in the sky when two users clash.

infusion a method of augmenting a user's body or weapon to dramatically increase attack power. can cause damage without weapons ever clashing.

observation killing control over his metaphysical presence and aura, which prevents others from using observation haki on him to see the future.
armament haki
armor uses spiritual energy to create an invisible armor or shield around the user's body, which greatly increases their power and resilience.

hardening coats any body part with a black shell, which is nearly impenetrable and significantly increases attack power. however, an opponent with stronger haki can overwhelm and penetrate the defenses of the weaker user. such an opponent would have to be exponentially more skilled than shanks to break his defenses.

imbuement a method of using hardening on a user's weapon to increase offensive power. prevents a blade from being damaged or chipped and increases its lifespan.

emission unleashes a burst of power from the user's body, which will knock back anything in the immediate vicinity with the force of a very powerful punch, allowing the user to strike or harm opponents or objects without making physical contact.
observation haki
presence sensing allows the user to sense the presence of others, even if they are concealed, hidden, camouflaged, or far away. can recognize others by their auras, view them as a mental silhouette, and can usually tell if specific people are still alive, dead, or close to death depending on whether they can still "hear" them.

strength sensing allows the user to measure the strength of another person or presence. the user can then easily locate powerful allies or avoid powerful enemies.

emotion sensing allows the user to sense and empathize with the emotions and nature of others passively or actively. however, those who have significant control over their emotions can fool or mislead this sense.

intent sensing allows the user to sense another person's intent to act in the immediate future (typically during combat), serving as a form of precognition. the more killing intent exuded by a given enemy, the more predictable their attacks.

future vision allows the user to see a brief glimpse of the future. instead of just sensing what will happen by intuition, the user can literally see a precise mental image of what will happen in the next few seconds (anywhere up to a minute), including anything that may be spoken.

conqueror haki:
astarion: he has some mental defenses thanks to the mindflayer tadpole in his head; that said, magic is not his strong suit, so shanks would outmatch him if push came to shove.
homelander: he has absolutely no mental defenses. :)
emmrich: though domination isn't his speciality, he is still a skilled mage and would able to push back at least a little. of my three boys, he'd likely fare best.
armament haki:
astarion: he's a rogue! he's not really meant for hand-to-hand combat! if none of his spells work (sleep, hold person, etc.), he's probably up shit's creek.
homelander: he is EXTREMELY hardy; it takes maeve-level strength to even put a dent on him.
emmrich: similar to astarion, if shanks actually gets his hands on emmrich, he's probably toast.
observation haki:

β€” EMOTIONS: yes. astarion acts very carefree but in actuality is quite guarded/careful about what he does. he's constantly putting on a performance.
β€” STRENGTH/POTENTIAL: he's stronger than he looks but it's not like he's hiding nuclear powers; the strangest thing that shanks might ping on is an alien presence in his head that could become extremely powerful.
β€” INTENT TO ACT/FUTURE SIGHT: fine with discussion! but also, astarion, as much as he loves pranks, is not an inherently murderous guy.

homelander:
β€” AURA SENSING/LOCATION/HEALTH MONITORING: sure. (aura: dark, dark red, almost black.)
β€” EMOTIONS: yes. homelander's emotions are kind of all over the place; they can change very quickly, but whatever he's feeling, he feels very strongly. negative emotions dominate his thinking more often than not, and he is definitely repressing some serious shit.
β€” STRENGTH/POTENTIAL: homelander is incredibly strong; that said, he's not set to gain any new superpowers anytime soon. the only anomaly shanks might be able to sense is the ceiling saltburnt has set on his abilities.
β€” INTENT TO ACT/FUTURE SIGHT: fine with discussion! he has no compunction re: killing other people.

emmrich:
β€” AURA SENSING/LOCATION/HEALTH MONITORING: sure. (aura: pale blue-green.)
β€” EMOTIONS: yes. he's usually pretty measured/not really the type to hide much, but there is an underlying β€” and extremely potent β€” fear of death.
